Wall Street Journal, Associated Press and Fox are all pissed. Sites like Techmeme and Newser are aggregating their stories and by the simple task of aggregating content that belongs to others, Techmeme is making money that the WSJ and others think belongs to them.
Oh that’s rich.
Media companies like WSJ are built on the foundation of aggregating consumers’ possessions (time, attention, personal information, etc). My time belongs to me, but media gets the money simply because they aggregate me. And now media is complaining about being aggregated?
Robert Thompson, managing editor of the WSJ says “revenue that should be associated with the creator is not garnered.” I think he’s right. I create my time attention and loyalty. I should start garnering the revenue for that.
Maybe Thomson will raise his hand as a consumer and sign up on my blog!
